The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic Islands distributed around the equator in the Pacific Ocean, 960 km west of continental Ecuador, of which they are part. Of the total land area (788,200ha), 96.7% (761,844ha) is the National Park, the 3.3% (26,356ha) settled area consists of urban and agricultural areas in the islands of San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Isabela and Floreana. In the area, three subsystems can be considered given the status of National Park, Park Land, Marine Reserve and Human Settlements (rural and urban area colonized).
